Short description
Sergeant Joe Gunn and his tank crew pick up five British soldiers, a Frenchman and a Sudanese man with an Italian prisoner crossing the Libyan Desert to rejoin their command after the fall of Tobruk. Tambul, the Sudanese leads them to an abandoned desert fortress where they hope to find water. Soon a detachment of German soldiers arrives and attempts to barter food for water, but Gunn and his followers refuse. When the Germans attack, Gunn leads his desert-weary men in a desperate battle, hoping that British reinforcements can arrive in time.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Kurt Kreiger (1916-2006), when his character runs back to his trenches and is overtaken by an enemy – played by Rex Ingram (1895-196) – who presses his face into the sand to kill him, he almost lost consciousness due to lack of air.
  • The Borrego Desert in California, north of the border with Mexico, served as the Sahara Desert in the film. Filming also took place in the city of Brawley, also in Imperial County, in the San Fernando Valley, and in Yuma, Arizona.
  • Two thousand tons of sand were brought to the set to create the impression of desert sands for the audience. Shadows were applied to the hills in the desert to make them more visible. Ripples on the sand dunes were created by applying paint to the sand and using a wind machine.
  • Makeup artist Harry Pringle created fake sweat droplets for the actors by mixing petroleum jelly with water.
