What's left behind the scenes

  • J.J. Abrams declined an offer to direct the third film in the *Star Trek* franchise due to his work on *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* (2015). He became one of the producers of *Star Trek Beyond* (2016), and the directing offer was made to Roberto Orci – one of the scriptwriters for the first two films of the rebooted franchise. However, in December 2014, Orci relinquished the director's chair to Justin Lin.
  • In August 2014, Paramount Pictures officially announced a postponement of the film's release date. The new date coincided with the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's (1921-1991) creation of *Star Trek* (1966-1969).
  • This is the first film in the *Star Trek* franchise not shot on 35mm film.
  • One of the scriptwriters, Simon Pegg, reported back in 2007 on "The Graham Norton Show" that he was working on the script for this film. On May 19, 2015, he announced on his own website that the film would be titled "Star Trek Beyond".
  • This is the first film in the "Star Trek" franchise that was not primarily filmed in Hollywood, but in Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada). There, all the sets were recreated from scratch in the studio, including the interior of the starship "Enterprise".
  • Justin Lin directed the film, and Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt, Morten Tyldum, Daniel Espinosa, and Duncan Jones were also considered for the position.
  • The film takes place 2.5 years after the events depicted in "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013).
  • Justin Lin's directorial debut in the science fiction genre.
  • This is the 13th feature film in the Star Trek franchise.
  • During the period when Roberto Orci was chosen as director, he hired Claudio Miranda as cinematographer, but with Orci's departure as director, Miranda left the project and was replaced by Stephen F. Windon.
  • The first film in the Star Trek franchise directed by someone born in Taiwan.
  • Idris Elba is the third actor to appear in the Thor film series who went on to appear in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Chris Hemsworth played George Kirk in the Star Trek (2009) remake, while Joseph Gatt played an officer on the bridge. In the Thor franchise, Chris Hemsworth played Thor, Idris Elba played Heimdall, and Joseph Gatt played Grundrot.
  • When it became known that J.J. Abrams would not be directing the film, Joe Cornish, John M. Chu, and Brad Bird were considered as directors in the early stages of the project.
  • The first screenplay not in the comedy genre, written by Simon Pegg.
  • In early interviews, the screenwriter Simon Pegg referred to the space station as "Starbase Yorktown." In the initial drafts of "Star Trek" (1966-1969) scripts, written by Gene Roddenberry, "Yorktown" was the name of the starship. Roddenberry later renamed it "Enterprise."
  • The film is released in the same year as Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." This also happened in 2002, when Stuart Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis" and George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones" were released.
  • The first film in the "Star Trek" franchise directed by someone born after the original "Star Trek" television series (1966-1969) aired. J.J. Abrams was born a few months after the premiere of the series' first episode, and Justin Lin – four years after the series finished airing.
  • Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella are the only members of the film's cast involved in the music business (hip-hop music).
  • The trailer for theatrical release was released on May 20, 2016.
  • Karl Urban admitted in an interview that he almost turned down the offer to reprise his role as Dr. Leonard McCoy. He was persuaded to accept the offer by director Justin Lin.
  • John Cho revealed that his character Hikaru Sulu is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This decision was made by screenwriter Simon Pegg as a sign of respect for George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series and is gay.
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin.
  • There were rumors at one point that William Shatner would appear as Captain Kirk in a cameo role, despite the character’s death in 'Star Trek Generations' (1994). However, the actor stated that he would not participate in the filming. In the original timeline, Captain Kirk died 16 years before the destruction of the planet Romulus.
