Short description
A very free adaptation of Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus', Goethe's 'Faust' and various other treatments of the old legend of the man who sold his soul to the devil. A nondescript man is lured by a strange map into a sinister puppet theatre, where he finds himself immersed in an indescribably weird version of the play, blending live actors, clay animation and giant puppets.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film employs techniques from traditional folk puppet theater. There are also many allusions to medieval plays about Doctor Faustus.
- The myth of Faustus flows into parallel myths: an episode where Faustus, in a theater basement, breaks a glass flask containing a homunculus, places a note in its mouth, and the doll comes to life – this story is clearly from another, albeit genetically related, mythology.
- The film features music by Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as music by Gounod from his opera of the same name.
