What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Jules Dassin (1911-2008) filmed this movie while the process of adding his name to the "blacklist" was underway. Studio head Darryl F. Zanuck (1902-1979) of "20th Century Fox" told Dassin that this might be the last film of his career and advised him to film the most expensive scenes first, so that the studio would not consider firing him before the film was completed.
  • Richard Widmark (1914-2008) lost a considerable amount of weight during filming due to the constant running.
  • Director Jules Dassin claimed that he did not read the novel of the same name (1938) by Gerald Kersh (1912-1968), which served as the literary basis for this adaptation, until he had finished working on the film.
  • Darryl F. Zanuck ordered this film, set in London, to be shot so that the film company could access at least a portion of the financial funds frozen there in accordance with British legislation of the time, which was characterized by protectionism in the film industry.
