In reality, Gary Cooper (1901-1961) was not a baseball fan. He had to be painstakingly trained for a long time to look convincing on the baseball field. He had never played baseball before filming this movie (not even in his youth) and had never watched baseball games live.
Teresa Wright (1918-2005), who played Lou Gehrig's (1903-1941) wife, wore the very bracelet in the film that he had given to his wife Eleanor Gehrig (1904-1984) on their fourth wedding anniversary. The bracelet was engraved with a dedication and the date – September 29, 1937. The bracelet is now on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
