Short description
In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he’s nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel.

- The film is based on the post-apocalyptic novel 'Z for Zachariah' by American writer Robert C. O'Brien, published in 1974.
- Tobey Maguire was supposed to play the role that ultimately went to Chris Pine.
- On his way home from a wrap party for the film in New Zealand, Chris Pine was stopped by police and forced to take a breathalyzer test. He was found guilty and faced a 6-month driving ban and a $93 fine. He received a small fine after donating a substantial amount of money to charity.
- The film is set in the American Midwest, but was entirely shot on the Banks Peninsula in New Zealand, as the American Midwest and the Banks Peninsula have similar geographical characteristics.
