What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the book by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, "Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10" (2007).
  • Peter Berg worked on this film for five years, while all the scenes were shot in 42 days.
  • Taylor Kitsch, Mark Wahlberg, and Peter Berg himself worked for a minimum salary of $17,000 per week.
  • Each of the long list of investors wanting to invest at least a million dollars in the project was credited as a producer.
  • Peter Berg planned to shoot 'Lone Survivor' before 'Battleship' (2012), but Universal Pictures convinced him to reconsider his priorities, and he conceded.
  • The film featured real military veterans.
  • The real Marcus Luttrell played a cameo role in the film. At the 12-minute mark, he spills coffee and orders a recruit to clean it up.
  • Peter Berg was researching materials for the film even during the production of "Hancock" (2008).
  • At the 8-minute mark, a photograph of Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy from "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" (2004) appears in the frame.
  • Before filming began, director Peter Berg visited the families of the deceased. Danny's father, played by Emile Hirsch, read him a detailed autopsy report detailing the 11 bullets removed from his son’s body. Berg said: "He read it and cried, and then said, 'That’s who my son was. That’s how hard he fought. I hope you get it right.'"
  • Although not mentioned in the film, Luttrell was personally awarded the Navy Cross by President George W. Bush. And Lieutenant Michael Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor. Axelsson and Dietz were also posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
  • At the 45th minute of the film, a green screen reflection can be seen in the pilots' sunglasses.
  • There are no rattlesnakes in Afghanistan; they only inhabit America. Also, the sumac mentioned in the film – poisonous sumac – does not grow in Afghanistan; it is a shrub native to North America.
  • During the film, one of the team's fighters can be seen with a Beretta 92 FS pistol in his holster, which is incorrect, as the Navy SEAL team is actually armed with SIG-Sauer P226 Navy and Heckler & Koch HK45C pistols.
  • At the 101st minute, when Mark pulls a large shard from his leg, he bites down on a soldier's medallion. The following shot shows nothing in his mouth, and then a shot with the medallion back in his mouth.
  • At the 9th minute, Michael Murphy enters Marcus Luttrell's room with a banana in his hand; however, when he sits on the bed, he is holding an apple.
  • The film is based on the book by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10, 2007.”
  • Peter Berg planned to film "The Survivor" before "Battleship" (2012), but Universal Pictures convinced him to reconsider his priorities, and he relented.
  • Peter Berg was researching material for the film even during the production of "Hancock" (2008).
  • At the 8-minute mark, a photograph of Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy from "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" (2004) appears in the frame.
