Short description
Giacinto lives with his wife, their ten children and various other family members in a shack on the hills of Rome. Some time ago he has lost his left eye while at work, and got a consistent sum of money from the insurance company, which he keeps hidden from the rest of the family. His whole life is now based on defending the money he sees as his own, while the rest of the family tries to kill him.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot almost entirely in Rome, in the Monte Coccioni district, where bidonvilles were located until 1977. Scola initially planned to shoot a documentary about the inhabitants of these slums, but later changed his mind and made a feature film.
  • The film was to be preceded by a preamble that Pier Paolo Pasolini intended to write. The writer and director’s tragic death prevented the realization of this plan.
