In his afterword to the book published in 2007, author Larry Doyle wrote that he initially wanted to create a film with a similar plot. When this idea did not generate much enthusiasm, he published it as a novel, which quickly attracted producers. They offered the author himself to adapt the work for the big screen, and thus his original idea became a reality.
The school in the film, Buffalo Glenn High School, is based on the real Buffalo Grove High School from the hometown of the book and screenplay author Larry Doyle.
Filming took place in the spring of 2008 in several schools in and around Vancouver, Canada.
