What's left behind the scenes

  • The film takes place in 2373 (the 405th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr.) between April 4th and 5th.
  • In one of the early script versions, Neil McDonough's character, Lieutenant Hawk, was gay. He could have become the first LGBTQ+ character in the Star Trek cinematic universe, but all references to his sexual orientation were removed from later script drafts. Lieutenant Hawk is depicted as gay in one of the Star Trek universe novels written by Andy Mangels and Michael Martin.
  • Due to budgetary constraints, the production team of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) was strongly opposed to the Borg sets and costumes. However, the funds allocated to this project allowed them to create the Borg as envisioned by the project's creators. As a result, both the sets and costumes were subsequently repeatedly used during the filming of Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001).
  • The Borg Queen was created because the scriptwriters had difficulty writing dialogue for what was supposed to be the central computer of the Borg.
  • Geordi La Forge's VISOR, as portrayed by LeVar Burton, was finally replaced with "visual implants." The actor had requested the VISOR be replaced for many years so that his eyes would be visible to the audience, believing that otherwise the expressiveness of his performance was lost.
  • Alice Krige, who played the Borg Queen, found the filming very difficult. The costume was too tight, chafing her skin, and the silver contact lenses she wore caused the actress so much pain that she couldn't wear them for more than 4 minutes at a time.
  • In one of the early script drafts, Neil McDonough’s character, Lieutenant Hawk, was gay. He could have become the first LGBT character in the Star Trek cinematic universe, however all references to his sexual orientation were removed from later script revisions.
