- In 1998, Brent V. Friedman wrote an unreleased script for "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." One possible reason for this was the major box office failure the previous year of "Mortal Kombat 2: Annihilation" (1997), for which Friedman was one of the screenwriters.
- Lara's father, Lord Croft, was originally named Henshingly, but was changed to Richard in later games.
- Part of the film was shot in Angkor, Cambodia.
- The exterior of Lara's manor is "Hatfield House," a large estate in Hertfordshire, England.
- To enhance realism, the actors in the film speak with accents not native to them: American Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) – with an English accent, Englishman Daniel Craig (Alex West) – with an American accent, and Ian Glen (Manfred Powell), a Scotsman – with an English accent.
- The Buddhist ceremony in which Lara participates (following the phone call scene with Powell from Cambodia) is shown authentically and is not staged.
