What's left behind the scenes
- The aircraft of the Kingdom of Honneamis closely resemble the experimental Kyushu J7W “Shinden” fighter, built in Japan during World War II.
- The film was made over three years (1984-1987).
- The film is the first work by a team from the «Gainax» studio, created specifically for this project. Prior to this, the studio's employees' experience was limited to technical participation in professional projects and amateur anime films.
- The project was sponsored by the "Bandai" company (more precisely, its division—"Bandai Visual"). The company's president, Makoto Yamashina, uttered a landmark phrase for the history of anime regarding the film: "I didn't understand anything. Therefore, it's a wonderful film."
- An entire alternative world was specifically developed for the film, primarily the state of Honneamiz: writing system, flag and coat of arms, uniforms, names, machine designs... The names turned out to be particularly strange, inadequately conveyed by either Japanese or Russian phonetics.
