The aircraft of the Kingdom of Honneamis closely resemble the experimental Kyushu J7W “Shinden” fighter, built in Japan during World War II.
The film was made over three years (1984-1987).
The film is the first work by a team from the «Gainax» studio, created specifically for this project. Prior to this, the studio's employees' experience was limited to technical participation in professional projects and amateur anime films.
The project was sponsored by the "Bandai" company (more precisely, its division—"Bandai Visual"). The company's president, Makoto Yamashina, uttered a landmark phrase for the history of anime regarding the film: "I didn't understand anything. Therefore, it's a wonderful film."
An entire alternative world was specifically developed for the film, primarily the state of Honneamiz: writing system, flag and coat of arms, uniforms, names, machine designs... The names turned out to be particularly strange, inadequately conveyed by either Japanese or Russian phonetics.
