Short description
Augusto and Michaela Odone are dealt a cruel blow by fate when their five-year-old son Lorenzo is diagnosed with a rare and incurable disease. But the Odones' persistence and faith leads to an unorthodox cure which saves their boy and re-writes medical history.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the true story of Augusto and Michaela Odone, who tried to find a cure for their son Lorenzo, who suffered from adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).
  • Director George Miller is actually a qualified medical doctor.
  • The role of Lorenzo's mother was originally intended for Michelle Pfeiffer, but she left to star in "Batman Returns" (1992). The role then went to Susan Sarandon.
  • Initially, it was planned that as Lorenzo's condition worsened, the film would gradually transition from color footage to black and white, but this idea required very large financial investments, and the film was simply shot in color from beginning to end.
  • Don Saddabi (playing himself) is a British chemist and the creator of erucic acid, which was used to treat Lorenzo.
  • Lorenzo Odone died in 2008 from aspiration pneumonia, just a day after his 30th birthday, living 20 years longer than doctors had predicted.
