What's left behind the scenes

  • In the film, unlike the novel, the events described take place over 12 years, not 45.
  • The scene in which Rosie and Alex lie on Rosie's bed with baby Katie was not originally in the script. The girl simply fell asleep during filming, and Lily Collins and Sam Claflin lay nearby on the bed waiting for her to wake up, but director Christian Ditter liked how it looked and ordered filming to begin.
  • Director Christian Ditter allowed Lily Collins and Sam Claflin to improvise in the scene where they walk home along the streets of Boston. The actors later admitted that they both considered this scene their favorite.
  • According to Sam Claflin, he was prepared to play his role with an Irish accent, but he was not allowed, and the film's setting was moved to England.
  • One of the scriptwriters, Cecilia Ahern, made a brief cameo appearance in one of the minor roles, but the scene with her was cut from the film during editing. This was done at the direction of director Christian Ditter. He noticed during one of the previews how the audience whispered about whether Ahern was in the episode or not, and decided to re-edit the scene so that the audience would focus on Rosie's words, and nothing else.
  • The original novel is set in Ireland, but the film's action was moved to England due to the predominantly English cast.
  • Many of the cars shown in the film do not match the time period of the events depicted.
