- The film is based on the first book by Rachel Mead from the "Vampire Academy" series.
- Sarah Hyland's audition for the role in this film was conducted via Skype.
- Dominic Sherwood was the last actor approved for a role in the film. His candidacy was approved a few days before the start of filming.
- The psi-dogs were originally filmed using trained animals, but director Mark Waters was unhappy with how they looked. As a result, they were replaced with models created using computer graphics.
- During the filming of the movie, Lucy Fry wore green contact lenses.
