What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the literary work "Cabal" by Clive Barker (known as "Nightbreed" in Russia).
  • The film was shot mainly in Canada, with only some interior scenes filmed in the United Kingdom.
  • The maniacal character played by David Cronenberg is named “Doctor Philip K. Decker,” a reference to Philip K. Dick. Furthermore, the surname “Decker” is similar to “Deckard,” the surname of the main character in the book *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?* which served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s film *Blade Runner* (1982).
  • Rutger Hauer and Christopher Lambert were considered for the role of Boone, but Craig Sheffer ultimately landed it.
  • Horror novelists John Skipp and Craig Spector “played” the corpses in the hotel.
  • 20th Century Fox severely cut the film right before its release, removing the most graphic scenes of violence and completely excluding the character of rock singer Suzi Quatro. Moreover, they presented the film as a run-of-the-mill slasher in the advertising campaign.
  • The film’s ending, where the priest revives David Cronenberg’s character by sticking his hand inside him, is a reference to Cronenberg’s film *Videodrome* (1982).
