Short description
Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy and daring son of Kevin Flynn, investigates his father's disappearance and is pulled into The Grid. With the help of a mysterious program named Quorra, Sam quests to stop evil dictator Clu from crossing into the real world.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Flynn created CLU in 1984, so the program remains a digitized version of its 35-year-old creator. Thanks to amazing new technologies, Bridges managed to "rejuvenate" by 30 years.
  • Jeff Bridges is the first actor in film history to meet on screen with a rejuvenated version of himself.
  • The 'Straightener,' a KLU warship, is three times the size of an aircraft carrier. The entire army of the usurper is aboard it.
  • The helmets worn by Frayne and other actors were specially designed by costume artists to match the characters and images of each hero in the film. There were no prop helmets on set.
  • Programs serving the KLU are highlighted by a special color scheme: their costumes and vehicles are illuminated in orange, red, and yellow. Ordinary inhabitants of the Network wear cold colors: white, blue, and silver.
  • It took a lot of time and effort to put on the costume of a Network inhabitant, so special inversion tables were used on set so that Garrett (and other actors) could detach from the ground and dodge in different directions without damaging the costume.
  • Preparing for the role of Sam, an extreme sports athlete, Headlund underwent training in motorcycle control, hand-to-hand combat, wire walking, capoeira, and parkour.
  • Hedlund and Olivia Wilde dreamed of working together since they met 7 years ago, when they both were still making their film debuts.
  • Olivia Wilde demonstrated such skill in martial arts that she surprised even the stunt performers. They advised her to continue training after filming wrapped.
  • Preparing for the role, Olivia Wilde practiced every fighting stance and every stunt with Hedlund – but, until the costumes were ready, she rehearsed barefoot, and later had to relearn to portray Quorra in high heels.
  • Michael Sheen watched the original film 'Tron' in Wales when he was 12, and became a devoted fan. He didn’t even suspect then that he would have the chance to star in the sequel.
  • Transforming the actresses into Sirens required 3 hours of work and the efforts of an entire team of makeup artists and hairdressers, as well as two costume designers.
  • A choreographer worked with the actresses playing the Sirens, striving to coordinate their movements so they moved in sync.
  • Before Garrett Hedlund was cast as Sam Flynn, Chris Pine, Ryan Gosling, and Michael Stahl-David were also considered for the role.
  • Cillian Murphy appeared in an uncredited cameo role as programmer Edward Dillinger, and his name does not appear in the credits.
  • Over 100 minutes of music were recorded for the film.
  • The film features approximately 60-70 separate sets, 15 of which were built entirely on location.
  • In Flynn's secret laboratory, located beneath the arcade, you can see footage and props from the first film.
  • The light suits were made using electroluminescent lamps from flexible polymer film. Most of the tight-fitting suits were made of latex sponge, while the Siren suits were made of spandex sprayed with liquid rubber for greater smoothness.
  • The light discs, created specifically for the film, consist of 134 LEDs each, are controlled remotely, and are attached to the costumes with magnets. They also contain batteries and all the electronics powering the glowing suits.
  • The news anchor states that Kevin Flynn became the head of Encom in 1982. The first 'Tron' film was also released in that year.
  • Steven Lisberger, the director of the first film, appears in a cameo role (as the bartender in the 'End of Line' club).
  • Sam's dog is named Marvin, after the prominent scientist in the field of artificial intelligence – Marvin Minsky.
  • The members of Daft Punk – Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter – performed as DJs at the "End of Line" club.
  • "End of Line" – the name of the club – signifies the end of a communication session in the world of the Network (this is how the Master Control Program said goodbye in the film "Tron").
  • The character named Zuse was named after Konrad Zuse, the creator of one of the first computers.
  • When Sam arrives home, a container with the inscription Dumont can be seen in the frame. This is the name of a character from the 1982 film, who was based on the founder of Encom.
  • Flynn created CLU in 1984, so the program remains a digitized version of its 35-year-old creator. Thanks to amazing new technologies, Bridges was able to be "de-aged" by 30 years.
