Short description
When soldier Robin happens upon the dying Robert of Loxley, he promises to return the man's sword to his family in Nottingham. There, he assumes Robert's identity; romances his widow, Marion; and draws the ire of the town's sheriff and King John's henchman, Godfrey.

What's left behind the scenes

  • It was previously assumed that Russell Crowe would play both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham.
  • The screenplay by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, titled "Nottingham," attracted the attention of half of the Hollywood studios. New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., Sony, New Regency Enterprises, and DreamWorks fought for the right to film it, but Universal Pictures ultimately won.
  • Brian Helgeland, with extensive experience in this kind of work, was specifically invited to rework the screenplay.
  • In addition to Ridley Scott, Brian Singer, Jon Turteltaub, and Sam Raimi were also contenders for the director's position.
  • The film's producers planned to recreate the Tower of London in Carnarvon, North Wales, but later abandoned this idea in favor of using computer graphics.
  • The initial release date was scheduled for November 26, 2009, but delays in the start of filming and screenplay revisions forced the release to be postponed until May 2010.
  • At the age of 45, Russell Crowe became the oldest actor to ever play this legendary character. Sean Connery was just shy of 45 when he played the already aging Robin Hood in "Robin and Marian" (1976).
  • Aylin Atkins replaced Vanessa Redgrave, who had dropped out of the project.
  • Scarlett Johansson, Emily Blunt, Angelina Jolie, Zooey Deschanel, and Natalie Portman all competed for the role of Maid Marian, but Sienna Miller was chosen. Later, the actress dropped out of the project, and Kate Winslet, Kate Blanchett, and Rachel Weisz became the main contenders. The first of them declined the offer, while the second quickly agreed.
  • The Nottingham sets comprise more than 50 buildings. A 20-meter-high French castle was also built near the studio.
  • Russell Crowe was the only actor on set who did not require horseback riding lessons. He constantly practices it on his own ranch in Australia.
  • Before it was announced that Russell Crowe would play Robin Hood, Christian Bale and Sam Riley were contenders for the lead role.
  • Rhys Ifans was considered for the role of King Richard, but Danny Huston ultimately got it.
  • The screenplay by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, titled "Nottingham," attracted the attention of half of the Hollywood studios. New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., Sony, New Regency Enterprises, and DreamWorks all competed for the rights to film it, but Universal Pictures ultimately won.
  • Filming began on March 30, 2009.
