Short description
Charley Partanna is a hitman who works for the Prizzis, one of the richest crime families in the US. When he sees Irene Walker, it's love at first sight. But he soon finds that she, too, is a killer for hire. Charley can overlook his suspicions, but he can't turn off his heart. And the couple must remember that even if they love each other, the Prizzis love only money.

What's left behind the scenes

  • “The Family Business” is based on a work by Richard Condon.
  • Director John Huston reminded Jack Nicholson of his character every time before filming began: "Remember, he's stupid."
  • Julie Bovasso taught Jack Nicholson how to speak with a proper Brooklyn accent. As research for his role, he spent time immersing himself in the lives of Brooklyn's lower classes.
  • The studio believed the film would have poor box office results and therefore wanted to release it on home media relatively quickly. However, thanks to fantastic reviews, the film exceeded all expectations and played in theaters for a long time, even after it appeared on video store shelves.
  • Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray, Ryan O'Neal, Christopher Reeve, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone, John Travolta, and Jon Voight were considered for the role of Charlie.
  • Kay Lenz was originally cast as Irene.
  • Jodie Foster was considered for the role of Irene, but at that time she was more interested in her studies at Yale University.
  • Kim Basinger wanted to play Irene, but director John Huston rejected her candidacy.
  • Christy McNicol, Tatum O'Neal, and Brooke Shields were considered for the role of Irene.
  • Liza Minnelli was offered the role of Marouse, but she declined.
  • Mia Farrow, Rosanna Arquette, Kathy Bates, Linda Blair, Cher, Glenn Close, Geena Davis, Farrah Fawcett, Carrie Fisher, Melanie Griffith, Daryl Hannah, Goldie Hawn, Barbara Hershey, Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, Kelly LeBrock, Heather Locklear, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Demi Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan, Susan Sarandon, Ally Sheedy, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Sela Ward, and Debra Winger were considered for the role of Marouse.
  • Sharon Stone auditioned for the role of Irene.
  • Al Pacino was offered the role of Charlie, but he declined.
  • This film marked the debut in Stanley Tucci's acting career.
  • Wax was applied to various parts of Irene’s red car. When the car first appears in the film, its left door is an unusual matte color, while the rest of the car is polished to a shine. Later, when the car is shown from the front left, its front left door is already polished, and the front fender on the same side is not. This was done to avoid reflections of the film crew in the car’s body.
  • When Charlie and Irene are in her convertible, the shadow of a camera mount is visible on the road.
  • When Irene shoots Charlie, the pillow behind his back explodes with a shower of sparks. There should be no sparks when a bullet hits a pillow.
