The plot is based on one of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, "The System of Doctor Smollett and Professor Perrot."
Filming took place in Bulgaria, and some scenes were shot in the "Vrana" royal palace on the outskirts of Sofia.
The name of David Tulis's character is Mickey Finn. In slang, this refers to a drink laced with a substance given to an unsuspecting person to incapacitate them.
When Edward Newgate feeds an elderly woman who had previously refused to eat, she grabs his shoulders. In the next shot, from behind the hero, she is holding his head. This error is repeated with each subsequent frame change.
At the beginning of the film, when Mickey Finn removes Edward Newgate's coat, the scarf remains around his neck. In the next shot, it is gone.
