What's left behind the scenes

  • The role of Kate/Offred was offered to Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver. Weaver was forced to decline due to pregnancy. Ultimately, Natasha Richardson was cast in the role.
  • The Commander lives at 1810 Cedar Street, Durham, North Carolina, USA. In the United States, this house is known for being the site where writer Michael Peterson killed his second wife in 2001. At the 55th minute of the film, Faye Dunaway and Natasha Richardson descend the same staircase from which, as the writer told doctors, Kathleen allegedly fell.
  • Bill Owen's (1914-1999) last film role.
  • Faye Dunaway initially refused the role of Serena Joy, the Commander's wife, finding her character too weak. However, she changed her mind after a phone call from the book's author, Margaret Atwood.
  • Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio turned down the role of Moira.
