- The role of Kate/Offred was offered to Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver. Weaver was forced to decline due to pregnancy. Ultimately, Natasha Richardson was cast in the role.
- The Commander lives at 1810 Cedar Street, Durham, North Carolina, USA. In the United States, this house is known for being the site where writer Michael Peterson killed his second wife in 2001. At the 55th minute of the film, Faye Dunaway and Natasha Richardson descend the same staircase from which, as the writer told doctors, Kathleen allegedly fell.
