What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot using some of the sets from the series "Hogan's Heroes" (1965-1971). By the time filming began, the series had already been cancelled, and when it became known that the finale required the burning of a concentration camp, the concentration camp sets used in the series were transferred to the filmmakers to save on dismantling them.
  • A loose adaptation of the story of Ilse Koch (1906-1967), known as the “Buchenwald Witch” (sometimes “Buchenwald Bitch”), wife of Karl Koch (1897-1945), who served as commandant of the Buchenwald and Majdanek concentration camps during World War II. She was known for her cruel treatment of concentration camp prisoners. At the end of hostilities, she was arrested, convicted of crimes against humanity, and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1967, she hanged herself in her cell.
