What's left behind the scenes
- The working title of the film was long "They Came from Upstairs," which later became one of the advertising slogans.
- The screenplay, written by Mark Burton and Adam Goldberg, was acquired by 20th Century Fox in March 2006, and direct work on the project began a year later, in March 2007.
- Filming took place from January 28 to April 18, 2008, in Auckland, New Zealand, and its surroundings. The main filming location was an old, two-story mansion with twenty-two rooms, the restoration and reconstruction of which cost $700,000. The owners of the mansion, a couple with four children, moved to a small cottage nearby for the duration of filming. Several additional scenes were filmed there again in April 2009.
- A video game based on the film was released on August 4, 2009, for personal computers, as well as Nintendo DS, Wii and Playstation 2 consoles.
