The working title of the film was long "They Came from Upstairs," which later became one of the advertising slogans.
The screenplay, written by Mark Burton and Adam Goldberg, was acquired by 20th Century Fox in March 2006, and direct work on the project began a year later, in March 2007.
Filming took place from January 28 to April 18, 2008, in Auckland, New Zealand, and its surroundings. The main filming location was an old, two-story mansion with twenty-two rooms, the restoration and reconstruction of which cost $700,000. The owners of the mansion, a couple with four children, moved to a small cottage nearby for the duration of filming. Several additional scenes were filmed there again in April 2009.
A video game based on the film was released on August 4, 2009, for personal computers, as well as Nintendo DS, Wii and Playstation 2 consoles.
