Short description
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Andrew Kevin Walker began working on the film as early as August 2001. Wolfgang Petersen was considered as director, and Akiva Goldsman as screenwriter. According to Goldsman's script, the Joker killed Bruce Wayne's fiancée, after which Wayne went on a rampage driven by revenge, resulting in a conflict with Superman, who tried to stop him. The project was then put on hold, but in the film "I Am Legend" (2007), written by Goldsman, viewers noticed a poster in the opening scene on the wall of one of the buildings – a Superman symbol against a Batman symbol.
  • Previously, Ben Affleck and Diane Lane starred together in the film "Superman Doomsday" (2006), where Affleck played George Reeves, the actor famous for his role as Superman on television.
  • Immediately after it became known that Ben Affleck had been cast as Batman, he began spending two hours a day at the gym to get into the necessary physical shape for the role.
  • Adam Driver, Penn Badgley, and Ezra Miller auditioned for the role of Nightwing, an ally of Batman.
  • Jamie Alexander, Olga Kurylenko, and Elodie Yung auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman before it went to Gal Gadot.
  • The film's title is a reference to the "Justice League".
  • Jason Momoa was offered the role of Doomsday.
  • Ben Affleck asked Christian Bale for advice on portraying Batman. Bale replied: "The worst thing about this suit is when you need to pee. Keep that in mind." The actors met by chance in a store where they were buying Batman costumes for their sons.
  • Ben Affleck told Jimmy Fallon in an interview that Warner Bros. warned him about the potential negative reaction from the public to his casting as Batman. He was advised not to go online when the official casting announcement was made. The actor was shown unflattering responses from fans of the franchise to casting choices in previous films. Affleck disregarded the advice and went to a forum. The very first comment he saw was succinct: "Affleck as Batman? NOOOOO!" The actor immediately turned off his computer.
  • Top managers at Warner Bros. were shown a rough cut of the film. It is said to have made such an impression that those present gave a standing ovation at the end of the screening, and then held negotiations with Ben Affleck about filming three separate Batman films, although initially only one was planned.
  • For filming in this movie, Henry Cavill doubled his muscle mass compared to filming "Man of Steel" (2013). As a result of constant training before and during filming, the actor reached a weight of 100 kilograms, but soon lost the weight again. His trainer once said that gaining weight became possible because between these two films Cavill maintained the physique he had gained for the role of Superman, so they didn't have to start from scratch.
  • Ben Affleck said he was surprised when he was offered the role of Batman and initially even considered turning it down. He agreed to the role after meeting with Zack Snyder, who told him about his vision for Batman and introduced him to the concept of the film.
  • To prepare for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman), Ben Affleck gained nearly 14 kilograms of muscle mass and reduced his body fat to 8% of his total body weight.
  • Christian Bale once said in an interview that he feels envious when another actor plays the role of Batman. "I feel jealous that someone else will play him," he jokingly stated. Bale played Bruce Wayne (Batman) in the film trilogy about this superhero: "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Dark Knight" (2008), and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012).
  • Ben Affleck revealed in an interview that he asked the producers if he could keep the hero's costume after filming. They replied that he could, but for $100,000. Affleck decided that simply taking a picture in the costume would be cheaper.
  • Jimmy Fallon once asked Ben Affleck what his daughters thought of his portrayal of Batman. "They don't think anything of it," he replied. "They only watch 'Frozen' (2013)."
  • Hans Zimmer wrote separate music for each of the superheroes, with the exception of Batman. It will be featured in the film "Justice League: Part One" (2017) and standalone films about these superheroes.
  • When reporters asked Gal Gadot how she was going to get a chest like her character Wonder Woman, she replied: "Wonder Woman is an Amazon, and Amazons only had one breast. So strict adherence to the canon would be... problematic." In preparation for the role, the actress practiced kung fu, kickboxing, swordsmanship, jiu-jitsu, and a Brazilian martial art called "capoeira".
  • Producers claim that this will be the first film from "DC Comics" to unite different characters in a single cinematic universe. As Snyder stated: "Batman will be brought into the universe where Superman lives."
  • Jason Momoa confirmed that he signed a contract with "DC Comics" to star in four films.
  • This is the first feature film to feature Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman together (the so-called Trinity).
  • The Batman costume worn by Ben Affleck's character was copied from the Batman costume in Frank Miller's comic "The Dark Knight Returns."
  • This is the first feature film featuring Diana Prince, also known as Wonder Woman. Until now, this character has only appeared in a television series and animated films.
  • Stephen Amell, known for his leading role in the series "Arrow" (2012), announced that he would like to star in this film.
  • Will Smith, who starred in the lead role in "I Am Legend" (2007), will play Deadshot in "Suicide Squad" (2016), which will take place in the same cinematic universe as Batman v Superman.
  • Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Matthew Goode, Richard Armitage, Max Martini, Armie Hammer, Jensen Ackles, Joe Manganiello, Idris Elba, and Matthias Schoenaerts were candidates for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman) before the filmmakers settled on Ben Affleck.
  • This is the first live-action film featuring a character named Victor Stone, also known as Cyborg.
  • Starting with 1943, this will be Batman's tenth appearance on screen. Superman has appeared on screen sixteen times, starting with 1939.
  • Impressed by Tom Hanks' performance in "Cloud Atlas" (2012), the filmmakers wanted to offer him the role of Lex Luthor.
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan was once considered for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman). He ultimately played Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne's father.
  • Timothy Dalton was considered for the role of butler Alfred Pennyworth.
  • The film was initially planned for release in 2015. "Given the complexity of the visuals," the premiere was postponed to 2016 to "give the filmmakers the opportunity to most vividly reflect their ideas on screen."
  • Ben Affleck was offered the chance to direct a prequel to "Man of Steel" (2013), but he declined, citing a lack of experience with special effects. Affleck said: "I've long understood that special effects, their cost, and the like are not the main thing. The main thing is what the film is about."
  • Considering that Ben Affleck is a year and a half older than Christian Bale, he became the first actor to play Bruce Wayne (Batman) who was older than the actor who played the same role in the previous live-action film featuring a mix of actors and computer graphics. Until now, all actors who have played Batman have been younger than their predecessors. Val Kilmer "inherited" the role from Michael Keaton, who was 8 years older than him. George Clooney then played Batman, who was a year and a half younger than Kilmer. Christian Bale, the next actor to take on the role, was 13 years younger than Clooney.
  • The film was partially shot in the IMAX system.
  • Gal Gadot is the first non-American actress to play Diana Prince, or Wonder Woman. On the other hand, for the Wonder Woman character, this is the third project in which live-action performances are combined with animation. The first two were the "Wonder Woman" series (1975-1979) and the television project "Legends of the Superheroes" (1979).
  • Superman's costume is significantly brighter than usual. The blue color in the palette is also slightly lighter, and the yellow background behind the "S" shield is a bright gold. There are also some other changes, especially to the "S" shield on the costume.
  • Producer Charles Roven claims that Ben Affleck was the very first candidate for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman) and the first person the filmmakers approached with an offer to play the part.
  • Filming took place primarily in Detroit, Michigan.
  • Actress Alexandra Daddario expressed interest in the role of Wonder Woman.
  • Costume designer Michael Wilkinson deliberately made Batman's suit fabric-based and removed the armor. "Batman's invulnerability is the result of his incredible physical strength and combat skills," Wilkinson said.
  • Michael Wilkinson, the costume designer, commented on the Batman suit: "Zack Snyder told me that the main thing was for our Batman to look huge and pumped up. Even bigger than Superman. But it wasn't about armor and other gadgets, he just needed to look like a mountain of muscle. Snyder himself loves Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns' comic. We certainly had to work on Batman's appearance. We especially succeeded with the mask, and I am genuinely proud of it. Batman can even turn his head in it, which is important in the sense that the mask doesn't restrict his movements, so Batman can perform stunts in it."
  • In the animated film "Justice League: Paradox of the Source" (2013), Victor Stone, also known as Cyborg, is voiced by actor Michael B. Jordan. At one point, the same actor was considered for the role of Victor Stone (Cyborg) in a film combining live-action and animation. Michael B. Jordan plays Johnny Storm, or the Human Torch, in “Fantastic Four” (2015), the first film in the rebooted series about these comic book heroes.
  • This is Ben Affleck's second appearance on screen as a comic book superhero. In 2003, the film "Daredevil" was released, in which he played Matt Murdock, known as Daredevil. Like Batman, Daredevil is skilled in martial arts and began fighting crime after the death of a loved one.
  • Jesse Eisenberg was eventually cast as Lex Luthor, but initially, the filmmakers considered Matt Damon, Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Jean Dujardin, Mark Strong, Denzel Washington, Joaquin Phoenix, and Idris Elba for the role. Damon previously auditioned for the role of Harvey Dent in "The Dark Knight" (2008).
  • The character Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and American comic book writer Bill Finger, who initially named the character "Bat-Man." This superhero first appeared in the monthly comic book "Detective Comics" #27 in May 1939.
  • It was claimed that Zack Snyder's son, Eli Snyder, would appear in one of the flashbacks in the film as Jason Todd (Robin). In an interview, the director refuted these rumors as untrue.
  • Linda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in the mid-to-late 1970s television series, disliked the Wonder Woman costume worn by Gal Gadot in the film. Carter felt it lacked red, white, and blue.
  • The film's title includes the word "justice" as an indication that the main characters are members of the "Justice League," a team of superheroes whose first film was released in 2017.
  • Jesse Eisenberg starred in "The Social Network" (2010), which was produced by Kevin Spacey, the former actor who played Lex Luthor.
  • This is the first film alternating between live-action and computer graphics to feature Batman and Superman together, but it is not the first time the actors who played these characters have met on set. Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve starred in "Speechless" (1994).
  • It is rumored that actor Dan Amboyer will play Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) in subsequent films set in the DC Extended Universe, although he is only listed in the cast as playing a pilot.
  • Costume designer Michael Wilkinson incorporated an element of Amazonian writing into Wonder Woman's costume. He did the same with Superman's costume, which features an inscription in Kryptonian.
  • The film's release coincided with the premiere of a film based on the comics of «Marvel», which also features a battle between two heroes. The film is called «Captain America: Civil War» (2016).
  • The working title of the film on set and elsewhere was «Sage & Milo» (the first word translates as «wise man», the second refers to the ancient hero Milo, or Milon of Croton).
  • Henry Cavill and Amy Adams doused each other with ice water on set as part of a charitable ice bucket challenge to raise funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research. Cavill also had several buckets of ice dumped on him.
  • "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016) marks Holly Hunter's return to superhero films. In "The Incredibles" (2004), she voiced Elastigirl.
  • Tao Okamoto plays the role of Lex Luthor's assistant, Mercy Graves. This is the second film in which the role of Mercy Graves has been played by an actress of Asian descent. The first was "Batman" (2004).
  • Initially, British actress Lucy Griffiths was considered for the role of Wonder Woman.
  • In 2007, Jason Reitman was offered the opportunity to direct "Justice League." Reitman declined the offer. He considers himself an independent filmmaker and does not want to work on high-budget superhero films.
  • In the early stages of developing the film, the creators considered making a character named Metallo the main villain.
  • Actress Megan Fox expressed interest in playing the role of Diana Prince (Wonder Woman).
  • In 2013, the press reported that Jackie Earle Haley auditioned for one of the roles in the film.
  • The actor who played Jimmy, Michael Cassidy, appeared in seven episodes of the 2001 series "Smallville," about the youth of Superman.
  • Rapper and actor Tyrese Gibson once admitted that he would like to play the role of John Stewart, also known as Green Lantern.
  • In 2014, a rumor circulated that the film would consist of two parts. It turned out that this was not the case.
  • At one time, Armie Hammer was considered for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman). The same actor was also supposed to play Batman in George Miller's unreleased film "Justice League: Mortal," which was canceled due to the writers' strike.
  • This is the first 3D film to feature not only Batman, but also Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman. The first Superman film in this format has already been released – it's "Man of Steel" (2013). "Green Lantern" (2011) was the first film about Green Lantern in 3D, and it has no connection to this franchise.
  • At one point, the filmmakers considered Tyler Hake for the role of Bruce Wayne (Batman).
  • Ben Affleck and Harry J. Lennix Jr. starred in "The Great Game" (2009) alongside Russell Crowe, who played Jor-El in "Man of Steel" (2013).
  • Lex Luthor's image in the film is presented similarly to his portrayal in the limited comic book series "Superman: For All Seasons." In it, Luthor looks down on Superman due to his alien origin.
  • In the graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns," Batman's clash with Superman occurs after the dissolution of the Justice League. In the film, they fight before it is formed.
  • Jason Momoa's portrayal of Aquaman is based on the character from comics published in the 1990s.
  • Michael Shannon, who played General Zod in "Man of Steel" (2013), portrays Zod's corpse in the film. The actor once recounted that, due to gloves resembling fins or flippers at the ends of his costume sleeves, he spent a long time stuck in a restroom stall on set, unable to open the door himself. This, of course, turned out to be a fabrication.
  • Doomsday in the film is depicted as envisioned by its creators. It is a creature from Krypton, the result of experiments that transformed it into a biological weapon. Furthermore, the film attributes some characteristics of the supervillain zombie Solomon Grundy to him.
  • An image of Aquaman that appeared online is accompanied by the caption "Unite the Seven." This refers to the seven core members of the "Justice League" – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman himself.
  • Robin's costume was first shown to the public in a trailer presented during the annual "Comic Con" festival in San Diego in 2015. It features the words "Ha-ha-ha. You're a fool. Batman" written in yellow letters.
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan, who played Bruce Wayne's parents in this film, previously appeared in the series Supernatural and The Walking Dead.
  • Ben Affleck and Michael Shannon had previously worked together in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor.
  • Ben Affleck is the tallest actor to portray Batman. He is 192 centimeters tall, which is taller than the canonical Bruce Wayne, who is 188 centimeters tall.
  • Justin Bieber posted a photo of himself with the film's script on Instagram. Everyone immediately assumed that Bieber would play Batman's loyal friend and partner, Robin. It later turned out to be just a sketch for Funny or Die. Chris O'Donnell, who played Robin in Joel Schumacher's films, posted his response to Bieber's photo on the same Instagram.
  • This is the third film featuring both Ben Affleck and Scoot McNairy. They previously starred together in Argo (2012) and Gone Girl (2014).
  • Initially, Vicki Vale, a reporter for the Gotham Gazette, was planned to be included in the film. However, the character was soon dropped.
  • Emily Blunt was in negotiations for the role of Catwoman. However, she was turned down for it.
  • David Morse auditioned for the role of Commissioner Gordon, but after a script revision, the role was completely cut.
  • Peter Jackson declined an offer to direct the film.
  • The film was based on the comics «Batman: The Dark Knight Returns», «Kingdom Come», «Superman: Peace on Earth» and «The Death of Superman».
  • The inscription on Robin's costume reads "You're the fool." This is a phrase used by Jason Todd, Batman's second protégé, who died at the hands of the Joker. However, in some storylines, Todd did not die, but became an anti-hero known as the Red Hood. In other versions, he remained Joker's prisoner forever, where the Joker continues to torture Todd in the hope of breaking his spirit and making him his successor.
  • The piece of kryptonite behind glass that Lex Luthor is examining is shaped like Zod's skull.
  • A photograph of Dick Grayson's grave from the film once appeared online as a result of a leak, but DC immediately removed the image.
  • In the scene where Batman is shown in heavy armor, a question mark is depicted on one of the columns behind him. This is a reference to the Riddler, a master of puzzles and riddles.
  • Megan Fox expressed interest in the role of Diana Prince (Wonder Woman).
  • This is the third film featuring Ben Affleck and Scoot McNairy. They previously starred together in "Argo" (2012) and "Gone Girl" (2014).
