- Paweł Pawlikowski could not find an actress for the lead role, so he asked friends to discreetly film potential candidates on the street if they seemed suitable. One of his acquaintances spotted Agata Trzebuchowska in a Warsaw café and persuaded the girl to come to an audition.
- The debut role of university student Agatha Tshebukhovskaya.
- In the scene where Wanda lays out photographs of deceased relatives, one of the pictures depicts Irena Sendlerowa (1910-2008) – a Polish activist of the Resistance movement who rescued 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto.
