Short description
19-year-old Eric, arrogant and ultra-violent, is prematurely transferred to the same adult prison facility as his estranged father. As his explosive temper quickly finds him enemies in both prison authorities and fellow inmates — and his already volatile relationship with his father is pushed past breaking point — Eric is approached by a volunteer psychotherapist, who runs an anger management group for prisoners. Torn between gang politics, prison corruption, and a glimmer of something better, Eric finds himself in a fight for his own life, unsure if his own father is there to protect him or join in punishing him.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film’s title ("Starred Up") is a term used to describe the transfer of a criminal from a juvenile correctional facility to an adult prison.
- The film is based on a story from the life of screenwriter Jonathan Asser, when he worked as a volunteer therapist at Her Majesty’s Wandsworth Prison.
- The film has no musical accompaniment except for the scene where Neville escapes from his cell and the end credits.
- In the scene where Neville tries to revive Eric, the belt is still around Eric's neck. However, in the next shot, when Eric coughs, the belt and any marks from it on Eric's neck are not visible.
