In real life, Anthony Quinn was close friends with gangster Frank Costello.
When Don Faranzano (played by Sir Michael Gambon), whose real surname was Maranzano, introduces his associates at a banquet where he calls himself the "boss of all bosses," he names the following: Lucky Luciano (1897-1962), Joe Bonanno (1905-2002), Crazy Joe (Joe Profaci, 1897-1962), Vincent Mangano (1888-1951) (who disappeared in 1951 and was declared dead in 1961), and Tommy Gagliano (1883-1951). After Lucky actually orchestrated the murder of Faranzano/Maranzano, the five associates became the heads of the Five Families, controlling organized crime in New York. Over time, the Luciano family changed its name to Genovese, Mangano to Gambino, Gagliano to Lucchese, and Profaci to Colombo. The Bonanno family retained its name.
To avoid complicating the narrative, three individuals were removed from the inner circle of Lucky Luciano – Tommy Lucchese, nicknamed Three Fingers (1899-1967), Vito Genovese (1897-1969), and Albert Anastasia (1902-1957). All of them helped send Joe Masseria (1886-1931) and Salvatore Maranzano (depicted as Faranzano in the film) (also 1886-1931) to their deaths. In reality, Anastasia and Genovese helped Bugsy Siegel (1906-1947) kill Masseria in a cafe, and Lucchese helped Siegel and his associates of Jewish origin (who pretended to be federal government agents) gain access to Maranzano’s office, as Maranzano fully trusted him.
