The film is based on the biographical book by a well-known American writer, Mona Simpson. Mona is Steve Jobs's biological sister, of whom he was unaware until the age of 27. The book, "Anywhere But Here," tells about Jobs's childhood and biological parents.
Before filming began, Susan Sarandon told the producers she would not appear in the film unless Natalie Portman played the role of her daughter.
