To enhance authenticity, Jacques Audiard hired former prisoners as consultants and extras.
Director Jacques Audiard and actor Tahar Rahim met while riding in the same car from a film set.
Shortly before starting work on this film, director Jacques Audiard showed one of his films to prisoners in a French prison. The atmosphere impressed him so much that he decided to shoot his next film specifically about prison.
