Short description
Bobby Griffith was his mother's favorite son, the perfect all-American boy growing up under deeply religious influences in Walnut Creek, California. Bobby was also gay. Struggling with a conflict no one knew of, much less understood, Bobby finally came out to his family.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the scene of the Griffiths family's conversation with two clergymen, real photographs of Bobby Griffith can be seen on the wall.
  • Mary Griffith appears as an extra in the film's final scene and served as the prototype for Sigourney Weaver’s character.
  • To "get into the role," Weaver read all the books Mary Griffith recommended to her, from the Bible to "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask." The actress visited the Griffiths' home and spoke with the family in the very living room where everything happened.
  • The red convertible in which Bobby's boyfriend drives him to meet his parents is a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider, even though Bobby committed suicide in August 1983.
