What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title includes the words 'hot summer,' but the closing credits express gratitude to the crew for their fortitude during a 'cold spring' in Pennsylvania. Steam can be seen forming from the characters’ breath in some scenes of the film.
  • The owners of the camp where the film was shot were told it would be a family comedy. What they saw on screen shocked them.
  • The film was shot over 28 days. It rained for 23 of those days.
  • In the original script, there was a scene where Paul Rada's character kills a man to prevent the truth about the numerous deaths caused by his negligence from surfacing. The director and one of the scriptwriters, David Wain, cut the scene because he let his father read the script, and his father declared he would disown him if he dared to include anything like that in the film.
  • At one point in the script, Gideon Jacobs' character was supposed to kiss Molly Shannon's character. Jacobs was only 12 years old at the time of filming, and he felt extremely awkward, which was obvious to both the crew and Gideon's parents, who were present on set. Therefore, instead of a kiss, he was asked to simply adjust a strand of her hair. According to Jacobs himself, many viewers later told him that this scene was very touching and became their favorite moment in the entire film.
  • The film's title includes the words "hot summer," but the end credits express gratitude to the crew for their fortitude displayed during a "cold spring" in Pennsylvania. In some scenes, you can see the heroes' breath forming vapor.
