What's left behind the scenes

  • Director and producer Elia Kazan (1909-2003) and screenwriter Budd Schulberg spent several months studying the world of advertising to understand how advertising agencies manipulate public consciousness.
  • Most of the filming took place in Piggot, Arkansas. For one day of work in mid-August, 5,000 extras were hired at an hourly rate of $1. Musicians from six school orchestras were involved in the filming.
  • As part of the preparation for filming, Elia Kazan (1909-2003) and Budd Schulberg (1914-2009) traveled to Washington, where they spoke with future 36th President Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) and studied his mannerisms and behavior in private and in public.
