What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the book of the same name by Judith Viorst, which was published in 1972. The prototypes for the main characters were Viorst's sons: Alexander, Anthony, and Nicholas. The book sold over 2 million copies worldwide, received the status of a 'Notable Children's Book' from the American Library Association (ALA); the author received the 'Achievement in Literature' award from the George G. Stone Center, the 'Georgia Children's Book Award', and was one of the books featured on 'Reading Rainbow' (1983-2012), which encouraged young viewers to read.
  • Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner both attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Carell graduated in 1984, and Garner in 1994.
  • Over 500 boys auditioned for the role of Alexander.
  • Lisa Cholodenko could have directed the film, but she left the project in February 2013.
  • When Alexander's teacher chooses countries for an assignment, he points to them on a globe. The third time he does this, he names Lebanon, while pointing somewhere in the area of Alaska, the Bering Strait, or Eastern Russia.
