In the 1950s, during the height of the 'Red Scare' launched by Senator Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957), the film was considered subversive according to a decision by the House Un-American Activities Committee because its lines could be interpreted as 'pro-communist.' The screenwriter John Wexley (1907-1985) was blacklisted and his name was not even mentioned in the United States until the mid-1970s.
The plot of the film was inspired by the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942) by Czechoslovak resistance fighters and the subsequent reprisals.
