What's left behind the scenes
- Scenes set in Lawrence, Kansas, were actually filmed in Pattonsburg, Missouri. The town was flooded in 1993, and its population abandoned it.
- According to Jewel Kilcher, director Ang Lee cast her as Sue largely because of her crooked front teeth. The director felt that this is exactly what the teeth of a woman living in poverty in the 1860s should look like.
