What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Green. The author himself was almost always present during filming and gave advice to the actors.
  • Shailene Woodley cut her hair for the filming and donated it to Children With Hair Loss, an organization that makes natural wigs for children who have lost their hair due to illness.
  • Actresses such as Hailee Steinfeld, Liana Liberato, and Mary Kate Wiles were considered for the lead female role.
  • Actors such as Noah Silver, Nat Wolff, Brenton Thwaites, and Nick Robinson were considered for the lead male role.
  • The film's title is a variation on a quote from William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" (Act I, Scene II): "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves..." (in Russian translation: "It is not our fate – we ourselves are to blame for our enslavement...").
  • The original novel's author, John Green, initially didn't picture Shailene Woodley as Hazel, but she made such a strong impression at the audition that the entire committee was crying. And after that, the role was secured for her.
  • The film crew was unable to obtain permission to film in Anne Frank's actual house, so they had to build a replica of its interior.
  • In John Green's novel, Augustus Waters has blue eyes. In the film, however, Ansel Elgort retained his natural brown eye color.
  • Isaac has blond hair in the novel, but Nat Wolff kept his natural black hair color in the film.
  • The author of the novel on which the film is based, John Green, appeared in a cameo role as the father of the blond girl who talks to Hazel at the airport before flying to Amsterdam.
  • On the plane, the characters watch the film 'Aliens' (1986) on a tablet.
  • A poster for the film "V for Vendetta" (2006) hangs in Gus's room.
  • Some scenes were planned to be filmed in Amsterdam, but production designer Molly Hughes ultimately decided to move them to Pittsburgh, where a replica of the corresponding location was created, because the weather in Amsterdam was bad in mid-October 2013, and this could have created extra difficulties for the film crew.
  • At the 27-minute mark, Gus and Hazel watch the 13th episode of the 2nd season of the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997–2003) together.
  • John Green said that Hazel was inspired by a girl named Esther Earl, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Green noticed her at a Harry Potter fan festival in 2009, noting that she carried an oxygen tank with her. He then saw videos she posted on YouTube and was struck by her humor and openness. From the time they met until the girl's death in 2010 (she was 16 years old), Green and Earl corresponded.
  • When Gus reads the letter he wrote to Hazel, he says words different from those written in the letter. This can be noticed when the letter briefly appears in the frame.
  • Hazel says there are an infinite number of numbers between 0 and 1, and even more between 0 and 2. This is incorrect. These two intervals have the same cardinality, meaning they contain the same number of elements.
  • When Isaac breaks Gus's awards, the pillows on the bench appear and disappear with each frame change.
  • During the 'Night of Broken Awards,' Isaac holds an award with one column when he asks Augustus for permission. And in the next frame, you can see him breaking a statuette with two columns.
  • When the two protagonists first meet Van Houten, he finishes his drink twice before pouring himself more.
  • Throughout the film, Hazel has a plain white iPhone without a case in some scenes, and an iPhone in a gray case in others.
  • Peter Van Houten’s assistant’s email address can be seen when her letters are shown – it’s lidewij36@gmail.com. However, in some shots it changes to lidewij39@gmail.com.
  • When Hazel reads a letter from Van Houten, the text displayed on the screen is missing three commas. And when the letter is then shown on a laptop screen, the commas are present.
  • In the scene with the eggs, Augustus is positioned between Isaac and Hazel. And in the next shot, Isaac and Augustus abruptly switch places.
  • When Gus, Hazel, and her mother descend the escalator at the Indianapolis airport, a large poster depicting downtown Pittsburgh can be seen in the background.
  • The plot is set in Indiana, but in one shot the PPG Tower, which is located in Pittsburgh, can be seen.
  • Many cars in the film have Indiana license plates, but Pennsylvania state inspection stickers can be seen on the windshields. Furthermore, safety and emissions inspections are not mandatory for vehicles in almost all of Indiana, and therefore these stickers are not used.
  • In a letter written by Van Houten's assistant, she states the meeting date as May 5th. However, in the Netherlands, this date is a national holiday – Liberation Day. And on this day, the streets of Amsterdam would be crowded and filled with festive events, rather than being as quiet as depicted in the film.
  • When Gus and Hazel fly to Amsterdam, it is shown that they are flying on an American Airlines plane. The same airline's logo is visible on the plane in the scene where it lands in Amsterdam. American Airlines does not fly to Amsterdam. Only Delta Airlines and United Airlines fly to Amsterdam from the United States.
  • Hazel underwent a thyroidectomy (thyroid removal surgery), which should have left a scar on her neck, but this scar is not visible on her neck.
  • In the letter about the trip to Amsterdam that Hazel receives from Lidewij, it states that a room is reserved at the 'De Filosoof' hotel. However, the hotel they check into is the 'Amsterdam American Hotel'. And then, when Gus wakes up after a night with Hazel, the note she left him is written on a sheet marked 'Hotel De Vreugde'.
  • Hazel says she's getting an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), but then the rotating tube reveals she's actually getting a CT scan (computed tomography). Later, she mentions having a PET scan (positron emission tomography).
  • When Hazel and Gus leave the hotel to go to Van Houten's, they take a tram to get there. However, the travel information Hazel received before their flight stated that their hotel was across the street from Van Houten's house.
  • In the egg scene, when Monica’s mother exits the house and Isaac throws the egg he was hiding behind his back, it bounces as if it were a ball.
  • The film states that tulips originate from Holland. In reality, the first tulips only appeared in Holland in 1570 when botany professor Charles de l’Ecluse was invited to work there and brought tulip bulbs with him, along with other plants.
  • When Gus wakes up in the hotel after a night with Hazel, the clock shows 9:11, and in the next shot, when he finds the note, the clock shows 8:47.
  • The film's title is a variation on a quote from William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" (Act I, Scene II): "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves..." (in the Russian translation: "Not fate is to blame – we ourselves are guilty of our enslavement...").
  • On the plane, the characters watch the film "Aliens" (1986) on a tablet.
  • A poster for the film "V for Vendetta" (2006) hangs in Gus's room.
  • At the 27-minute mark, Gus and Hazel watch episode 13 of season 2 of the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997–2003) together.

From the moment they met until the girl's death in 2010 (she was 16 years old), Green and Earl corresponded.
  • During the "Night of Broken Awards", Isaac holds an award with one column while asking Augustus for permission. In the next shot, it can be seen that he breaks a statuette with two columns.
