What's left behind the scenes

  • Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon were initially part of the film's cast, but had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. Director Cameron Crowe spent 4 years rewriting the script to make the main characters younger.
  • The film received harsh criticism from audiences and reviewers for being set in Hawaii, yet featuring virtually no Asian or Hawaiian characters in the plot, and the only character supposedly of mixed Chinese-Hawaiian descent being played by white actress Emma Stone. Director Cameron Crowe apologized for the casting choices on his blog on June 2, 2015.
  • A phrase spoken by Bill Murray's character in Ivan Reitman's science fiction comedy "Ghostbusters" (1984): "We're gonna show this broad how we do things," can be heard on the soundtrack running from a launched satellite.
  • The theatrical release in France was scheduled for September 2, 2015, but the French branch of 20th Century Fox decided instead to show the film on a local analogue of the Netflix channel (premiered on October 19, 2015), and then to show the film on channels operating in a "video on demand" format.
  • Wearing hats is prohibited on US Air Force airfields, as they could be sucked into aircraft engine intakes.
  • In early versions of the script, Emma Stone's character was named Lisa.
  • During the Christmas party, personnel at the Air Force base play "crud". This is a team game played on a billiards or pool table, invented by the Royal Canadian Air Force.
