• The character played by Antonio Banderas speaks very little, as the actor barely spoke English at the time of filming.
• After several unsuccessful meetings with film companies, Isabel Allende, the author of the novel of the same name (and one of the screenplay writers), instructed her agent to cease all negotiations regarding a future adaptation. She changed her mind only when Bille August began showing her his 1987 drama, “Pelle the Conqueror.” Even before finishing the film, she realized that August was the one who should adapt her novel.
