- The band playing in the club at the very beginning of the film was "International Submarine Band" with vocalist Graham Parsons. However, Corman later removed all the country-rock from the film and replaced the soundtrack with psychedelic music by "Electric Flag".
- Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay based on his actual LSD trip experienced in a laboratory setting and the dramatic breakup of his relationship with his first wife, Sarah Knight.
- Bruce Dern didn't want to get involved with drugs, so he asked Corman about everything related to LSD.
- Jack Nicholson wrote the role of John to suit himself, but Corman decided to cast Dern in the part.
- The film failed to receive certification in the UK four times due to "LSD advertising." The full version was only certified in November 2002 with an "18+" restriction.
