The film is based on Adam Rex's book "The True Meaning of Smekday".
Initially, Jim Parsons' character was named "J. Lo", but the name was eventually changed to "Oh". In real life, J. Lo is a nickname for Jennifer Lopez, who, incidentally, also voiced one of the film's characters.
