The film is based on Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button".
The main characters, Arthur and Norma Lewis, are based on the director, screenwriter, and producer Richard Kelly's parents. His mother also had health problems (with her leg), and his father also worked at NASA on the landing module for the Viking program.

When James Marsden's character looks at a book on controlling people's minds, you can notice an illustration depicting a human skeleton with an arrow coming out of it in the chest area. This is the same illustration that appeared in the book "The Philosophy of Time Travel," which also appears in Richard Kelly's film "Donnie Darko" (2001).
