Short description
When shadowy U.S. intelligence agents blackmail a reformed computer hacker and his eccentric team of security experts into stealing a code-breaking 'black box' from a Soviet-funded genius, they uncover a bigger conspiracy. Now, he and his 'sneakers' must save themselves and the world economy by retrieving the box from their blackmailers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Professor Len Adleman is one of the co-creators of the "RSA" encryption system, widely used in computer security applications. In this film, he worked as a mathematics consultant.
- The film features the "Cray Y-MP," a multi-million dollar supercomputer that was one of the fastest in the world at the time the film was made.
- River Phoenix agreed to star in this film, in part because, after filming a "stressful" role with Gus Van Sant in the drama "My Own Private Idaho" (1991), he wanted to play "something calm, just for the money," and working with director Phil Alden Robinson, known as "Quiet One," met those requirements.
- Phil Alden Robinson, the director and one of the screenwriters, deliberately added profanity to the characters' vocabulary to prevent the film from being considered a children's film and receiving a "G" rating (unrestricted public exhibition).
