What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the story of Jerry and Mary Newport, who suffered from Asperger's syndrome (one of the five pervasive developmental disorders). An article about them appeared in the Los Angeles Times in 1995.
- The film was originally intended for Steven Spielberg, but he was already too busy, so the project was passed on to renowned Norwegian director Petter Næss. This film became his first to be shot in the United States.
