Short description
Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, itinerant journalist Paul Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman. Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s 'The Lost Generation', Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman and her fiancée, a businessman involved in shady property development deals.  It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Hunter Thompson's novel "The Rum Diary" (written in 1960, published in 1998).
  • Hunter Thompson passed away in 2005, but a chair belonging to Hunter with his name on the back was always present on the film set, next to a small table with an ashtray, a pack of cigarettes, and a bottle of whiskey. Depp and Robinson invoked Thompson's spirit to help them in this way.
  • Johnny Depp's character drives a red 1959 Chevrolet Corvette convertible, while Aaron Eckhart's character gets around in a red 1956 Austin Healey 100/6 convertible.
  • Johnny Depp broke his sobriety for this film in order to experience the effects of the alcoholic beverages mentioned in the book.
  • The director broke six and a half years of sobriety in order to finish the script, and again due to the stress during filming. According to Bruce Robinson: "There was drinking. When I wasn’t in Johnny Depp’s line of sight, I would return to sobriety.”
