Short description
A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filipino martial arts were used in the fight scenes. To prepare for these scenes, Melissa McCarthy trained with Diana Lee Inosanto.
  • The majority of the film was shot in the vicinity of Lake Balaton in Hungary.
  • The film was originally titled Susan Cooper, but the title was changed to “Spy” on March 28, 2014.
  • Ivy Levan's song "Who Can You Trust" plays during the opening credits.
  • Some of the action scenes and helicopter scenes were filmed on an open set at the Fot and Origo studio in Budapest, Hungary.
  • The labyrinth of limestone caves shown in the film are real caves, 23 miles long, located under a brewery in western Budapest, Hungary.
  • The character of Nancy was written by Paul Feig specifically for Miranda Hart.
  • Principal photography for the film took approximately 12 weeks.
  • The largest set piece on set was the CIA communications room.
  • For cinematographer Robert D. Yeoman, this film was the first shot digitally.
  • Melissa McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, appeared in a cameo role as a tourist asking for directions to Burger King.
  • Director Paul Feig appeared in a cameo role. He played a drunk man who bumps into a wall and falls as Melissa McCarthy arrives at her hotel in Paris.
  • During the filming of the airplane scene, when the steep dive created a weightless effect, the plane was secured on a special rig that allowed it to be tilted and rotated in any direction. All of the plane’s movements were controlled by hydraulic systems, and actors and stunt performers were attached to special cables to create the sensation of floating. To prepare for this scene, Rose Byrne trained in a swimming pool to learn how to control her movements.
  • Several weeks of rehearsals were needed to film the fight scene in the kitchen. The actual filming took two days.
  • More than 300 extras were used during the filming of the scene where Andrey Danilko (Verka Serdyuchka) performs the song "Dancing Lasha Tumbai" in the square.
  • During the chase after the BMW on a scooter, Susan Cooper lands in freshly poured concrete along with the scooter. In the next shot, the scooter is clean.
  • During the ride in a red Alfa Romeo through Rome, the car's dashboard and ventilation openings change in one of the scenes.
  • In the private jet, the champagne level in Susan Cooper's glass changes dramatically between shots.
  • During the chase after the BMW on a scooter, Susan Cooper is riding in high heels, but in the scene of the turn on the square, a close-up on the asphalt shows a foot in ballet flats without heels.
  • The film was originally titled Susan Cooper, but the title was changed to 'Spy' on March 28, 2014.
  • Ivy Levan's song "Who Can You Trust" plays during the opening credits.
  • More than 300 extras were used during the filming of the scene where Andriy Danylo (Verka Serdyuchka) performs the song "Dancing Lasha Tumbai" in the square.
