What's left behind the scenes

  • Arthur Miller (1915-2005) rewrote the script to center the plot around his wife, Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962). Gregory Peck (1916-2003), who was supposed to play the lead male role, disliked these changes and left the project, saying, "Watching a film made from this script would be as enjoyable and amusing as carrying your grandmother down the stairs in a wheelchair." Peck also did not particularly want to work with Monroe, who he had heard was constantly late for filming. The filmmakers wanted to cast Rock Hudson (1925-1985) instead of Peck, but he was under contract with Universal, and they would not release him. All of this played into Monroe's hands, as she wanted Yves Montand (1921-1991) to be cast in the role.
  • Marilyn Monroe disliked the script. She agreed to star only to fulfill the terms of her contract with 20th Century Fox and appear in one more film.
  • Yves Montand (1921-1991) described the filming as terrible because he did not speak English and was forced to memorize his lines by ear.
