What's left behind the scenes

  • In an interview, Luc Besson revealed that it took 10 years to bring this project to fruition. The director also said that he was aware of some inaccurate scientific assumptions, such as the belief that people only use 10 percent of their brains. Nevertheless, he stated that 'such an assumption' should be a great starting point for a science fiction film.
  • The film claims that Lucy was the first human. In reality, science does not recognize the concept of a 'first human' or any other first representative of a species. Lucy is the oldest individual of the Australopithecus afarensis species discovered to date.
  • Director Luc Besson played a cameo role as a doctor in a hospital in Paris.
  • Just before the car chase ends, an elderly man reading a newspaper can be spotted in the frame. The top of the front page features an advertisement for the film 'Pacific Rim' (2013).
  • When Lucy is in Times Square, a billboard advertising the film "Malavita" (2013), also directed by Luc Besson, is visible behind her right shoulder.
  • In the flashback scene, Native Americans are shown in New York. In reality, these were Plains Indians, not natives of New York. Furthermore, they are riding horses, which were brought to the New World by Europeans.
  • When Lucy speaks to the French police, she states that CPH4 appears as a blue powder. In fact, the drug is in the form of blue crystals.
  • When Lucy calls the French police, she has already passed immigration control. However, in the next shot, she has not yet gone through passport control.
  • When Lucy removes the package of the drug from the courier’s stomach in France, her hands are completely covered in grime. In the next shot, she gets into the car with the police officer, and her hands are already perfectly clean.
  • When Lucy's image appears on the HDTV in the hotel room, scan lines are visible that shouldn't be visible on an HDTV. Additionally, the width of these lines changes with each frame.
  • It is impossible to use a police radio to intercept a call on a mobile phone.
  • When Lucy sees her cells disintegrating, she locks herself in the airplane bathroom. All the flight crew implore her to open the door. Any flight attendant knows that an airplane bathroom door can be easily opened from the outside in seconds.
  • When Lucy is running on the wall and ceiling of the prison cell, as if gravity is absent, it is visible that her t-shirt hangs in the wrong direction in each frame – towards the wall or the ceiling.
  • During the car scene, when Lucy is driving to the university, the dashboard shows the gear shift in “P” (Park), while the car is shown moving at high speed.
  • Professor Norman, Morgan Freeman's character, claims that life on Earth appeared 1 billion years ago. In reality, experts estimate it at 3.7 billion years.
  • Professor Norman, Morgan Freeman's character, claims that the human brain is used only 10% (15 billion neurons out of 100). In fact, this is a popular myth: the brain is used 100%, but not simultaneously, only as needed in its various sections.
  • During the scene where Lucy is transported to New York, there are many people around, but no one notices her, and no one finds it strange that a girl suddenly appears out of nowhere, or that she is sitting on an office chair in the middle of Times Square. However, when Lucy is transported to the age of dinosaurs, a predatory creature notices her immediately.
  • In the hospital scene, when Lucy threatens a doctor with a gun to remove a package of residue from her abdominal cavity, the surgeon, wearing sterile surgical gloves, first takes them off and then adjusts his non-sterile face mask with them, and then immediately begins the operation, which is strictly prohibited by the rules of asepsis and antisepsis in surgery. In real life, during operations, disinfected gloves are immediately replaced with new ones to prevent the development of infection in the postoperative wound.
  • When Lucy's skin turns black, her completely blackened hands are visible. In the next frame, her hands are shown again, but they are still flesh-colored.
  • In an interview, Luc Besson said that it took 10 years to realize this project. The director also said that he knew that some scientific assumptions were incorrect, such as the idea that people only use 10 percent of their brain. Nevertheless, he said that “such an assumption” should be a great starting point for a science fiction film.
