Short description

A thriller set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history, and centered on the lives of an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built.

Jessica Chastain decided that her character should only wear clothes by Armani, and contacted the fashion house with a request to borrow costumes. They responded understandingly, so her character wears vintage Armani dresses from 1981.
Javier Bardem was initially cast as the lead role, but the actor left the project due to creative differences with the film's creators. Jessica Chastain suggested actor and musician Oscar Isaac to replace him, with whom she studied together at the Juilliard School (one of the largest higher education institutions in the US in the field of art and music).
The role of lawyer Andrew Walsh, played by Albert Brooks, was originally written for Stanley Tucci.
